While most people either use or have heard of wearable technology, that is an IoT device that can make it easier for one to manage their health. More health apps are becoming available for download on a smartphone, and the apps can help monitor chronic health problems. For example, a person suffering from diabetes can use the app to help them keep track of their insulin levels, as well as when they need to check their levels. What makes these apps even better though, is that more doctors are implementing online portals that can connect with these health apps. Not only will people have a more efficient way of tracking their health problem, but doctors can monitor their progress remotely. This could reduce the number of doctor’s visits that many patients endure, and in time, can reduce the number of emergency room visits each year.

Safer Driving
In recent years, more focus has been shifted to creating more advanced technology in vehicles to make driving safer and more efficient. Most new cars now feature built-in technology in cars that can find the quickest routes, monitor traffic, and even warn drivers when getting too close to another car while driving. Additionally, more apps are being created that provide the most updated information about a driving route. For example, the phone app, Waze, allows drivers to input an update for minor distractions, like if they see a car on a shoulder for instance.

While these are already available for drivers, we can expect additional features to be used in the coming years. New IoT technology in cars will soon have the capability to not only measure everything in the car, like the lifespan of the latest oil change but will actually be able to notify the mechanic when it is time for an oil change.

Efficient Homes
Creating a safer, more efficient home may be one of the most exciting advances in IoT technology right now. Not only will families be able to rely on their refrigerator to monitor what food is needed from the grocery store, but more pieces of technology are expected to become more self-sufficient. This can reduce the amount of time that Americans spend on daily house chores. For families managing a busy life, putting sensors within their home can notify them if a door or window is left open, or is opened while they are away. IoT technology can make life safer and more efficient across the board.

The advancements that IoT technology will be presenting in the coming years will change the ways that we live our lives. Through better communication and more efficient tasks, humans will have the ability to complete tasks at a quicker rate than ever before.

Today, IoT makes up various everyday things like ATMs, smart surveillance, traffic lights, and even thermostats. With such great potential and many advantages, it’s hard to believe there are some downsides to IoT.

Privacy Risks
In this day and age, having privacy and anonymity has become more difficult. As technology continues to take control of our everyday lives, privacy and security are slowly becoming a thing of the past. The IoT is making taking privacy risks to the next level. The more everyday devices, services, and appliances connect to the internet, the more information is readily available. This means confidential information is much more vulnerable to hackers and can get into the wrong hands.

Compatibility Challenges
Each device is unique in its own way.  The world has embraced technology and has found new and innovative ways of producing it. Different manufacturers have their own way of developing their technology with distinct connectivity. Because technology has become so diverse around the world, there is not an international standard of compatibility for the IoT. Due to the lack of compatibility standards, communication between the devices from different manufacturers around the world can present many issues.

Too Complex
The future is now, but we are still being held back by the simple systems of the past. Although IoT is already being used in our everyday lives, the complexity of this interworking system possesses many threats. A single failure in the software or hardware has the potential to reap catastrophic consequences.  This type of vast and complicated network system is far too advanced and complex. If just one malfunction were to happen, all devices and connections are put at risk and can also malfunction.

Job Market Decrease
Nowadays, computers and machines do the work for you. Technology has made our everyday lives easier and more efficient. But this could potentially mean that with more machines and devices taking over the day to day activities at home and the workplace, there will be less need for menial jobs and unskilled employees. IoT promotes automation and consistent technology, which could mean a sharp decline in employment.

With such great power to change the world and our everyday lives, the advancements of IoT is a technological revolution. Although it has the potential to improve the world around us, the disadvantages should not be ignored.

Computer Vision
The concept behind computer vision can allow cameras and other visual sensors to keep track of a variety of patterns with traffic, and use it to improve the roads. For example, the technology will have the ability to help improve the efficiency of the area, while also reducing potential hazards to the public’s safety. Using smart technology, the computer will also be able to reduce the amount of energy that is being used on the streets. For example, when the computer registers low traffic conditions, it will reset the lights’ brightness, to save as much energy as possible. The data that can be collected and retained through computer vision has the potential to improve roads all around the country.

Edge Computing
Edge computing has the potential to transform the future of technology. To give an idea, edge computing would allow information to be processed at the actual source and does not need to be stored back in a data center, better known as the cloud. This can not only significantly increase the efficiency at which technology works, but it can open doors to substantial increases in smart technology. To give an example, a smart building would have the ability to read any differences within the building and make adjustments as necessary. If one of the offices within the building begins to drop in temperatures, edge computing could register this change and adjust the temperature as a result. Like computer vision, smart buildings can adjust energy use when an area is not in use, helping to reduce unnecessary usage.

With advances in IoT technology like computer vision and edge computing, our cities can become more sustainable and efficient than ever before. With more emphasis being placed on the significance of sustainability, the advances from IoT is proving to come at a critical time in our society.
